The University of Sunderland has a brand new Equestrian Club.
The Equestrian Club has been set up this year thanks to an enthusiastic student and the support of the new sports officer.
When he arrived to Sunderland from Nottingham Uni the first thing that Richard Hudak noticed was that there was no club or society to serve equestrian loving students. Having made enquires last year into interested students and the sports office, Richard then set about looking for a riding centre for the club to train if the club should form.

Mark Clauzel and Dougie Curran two of the North East’s brightest boxing talents made winning starts to their professional careers at the Eston Sports Academy in Middlesbrough on Friday night.
The Newcastle based boxers both won points decisions after facing tricky opponents fighting on the Truscott - Simpson under card televised on Sky Sports 1.

Middlesbrough’s Paul Truscott has lost his Commonwealth featherweight title to John Simpson.
The 22-year-old Teesider began the fight well but was gradually worn down by his stronger and more aggressive opponent.
A bruising bout was stopped in the eighth round following a nasty cut to Truscott’s eye caused by an accidental clash of heads.
O’Sullivan wins Masters title

The most natural player the game of snooker has ever seen, Ronnie O’Sullivan, took the Masters title after an enthralling final at Wembley Arena, which the Londoner won 10-8.
Chinese New Year
Firecrackers, dragons, lions and unicorn dancing are among the celebrations in Newcastle’s China Town at 11am on 8th February 2009.
The event marks the most important celebration for Chinese people all over the world.
Florence Oiu, Chair of the Chinese Festivity Group, said: “Chinese New Year is a celebration of revival, regeneration and revitalisation. Each year we look forward to this celebration of Chinese culture where East meets West and hundreds of families enjoy a great day out at this colourful event.”
Exhibits include craft and food stalls, Chinese costumes, computer workshops and face-painting and lantern making. Refreshments are available throughout the day.

Pietersen resigns as Moores is sacked

After a roller coaster few months for English Cricket, Kevin Pietersen has left the post as England captain with immediate effect and Peter Moores has been given the boot as coach. 
Pietersen’s resignation comes after only five months at the helm, when he was named the successor of Micheal Vaughan by Moores, following England’s 2-1 defeat in the 4 test match series against South Africa back in August.
Ancient Greek Afternoon
The History of Ancient Greeks comes alive in a North East museum on the 27th January 2009.
The Old Fulling Mill Museum, Durham is hosting a programme of activities aimed at children between 5 and 11 which includes creating your own Ancient Greek Manuscripts and making Trojan Horses.
Admission fees are £1:00 for an adult and £ 0.50 for children and concessions.
